VR Tallinn 1939/44

VR Tallinn 1939/44 and the guided tour Traces of the Soviet Era in the Old Town

Tallinn’s Old Town is full of beauty, but behind its elegant façades lie stories of loss, destruction, occupation, and survival. This special programme combines a guided walking tour with the immersive virtual reality experience VR Tallinn 1939/44, taking you deeper into the visible and hidden layers of the city’s past.

You may think you know Tallinn — but have you really seen it?

Discover the city behind the façade

  • Why is the area around St Nicholas’ Church left unbuilt?
  • What happened on Harju Street?
  • What traces of the Soviet era are still hidden in the Old Town today?

This programme invites you to explore these questions through two powerful parts: a guided tour through the streets of Tallinn and a virtual reality time-travel experience that brings the lost city back to life.

Guided tour

Traces of the Soviet Era in the Old Town

The guided tour introduces you to buildings in Tallinn’s Old Town whose bright façades conceal stories from one of the darkest periods in Estonia’s history, as well as from Soviet-era cultural life between 1940 and 1970.

Virtual reality time-travel

VR Tallinn 1939/44

Step into the world of VR Tallinn 1939/44 and experience Freedom Square and Harju Street as they were in 1939. Tallinn comes alive around you as a spatial, colourful, and interactive cityscape. The streets are filled with townspeople, cars move through the Old Town, and a beautiful summer day unfolds in the heart of the capital. The first part of the journey ends in the suite of the famous Golden Lion Hotel.

Then history takes a darker turn. The second part of the experience begins on the evening of 9 March 1944, shortly before six o’clock. An air-raid siren signals the beginning of one of the most devastating moments in Tallinn’s history. You will witness the destruction of the March bombing both from above the city and while standing among the ruins of Harju Street. The journey concludes on a slightly brighter note, with the rebuilding efforts of 1946.
